Call to Web Designers: I can see your underwear!

Some 4 or 5 days ago, I shared in Twitter a great idea for a Flickr group from Jeffrey Zeldman: Underwear showing.

Essentially, it’s screenshots from well-known sites, when their background is set by default in some trippy colour, namely yellow, green or red.

Why does this happen? Because designers set their pretty backgrounds (tiling or not) using the background shorthand property, without properly defining a background colour. So if you set a weird default background colour, tada! Underwear showing.

This (well, this and some browsing around) reminded me how much sloppy and lazy we web designers are. Undefined background colours, “hanging” background images that are not properly optimized for widescreen monitors, unspecified font-sizes for headers, designing in Photoshop without caring for web restrictions.

We do that all the time. And we need to get our butts kicked about it.

So get yourself together, people (that includes me), and spend an extra minute checking your site before hitting that “Publish” button.

It’ll save you some face.
