The real life
Most of us are not monolithic. We have real lives apart from our online presence, we occupy ourselves with other things, we have hobbies and weird quirks that are unique and strange and awesome.
I was thinking of the amount of diversity that runs my life during the last few years and thank God, I think it’s great.
So think. Name one or two or three things you do and are not a part of this ‘online’ thingy. Things that are totally irrelevant to your web persona.
For example, I’m a web designer / developer by trade and a blogger by hobby. But:
- I always take part in my family agricultural works - the ones that need hands, that is. Olive gathering, grapes harvest, you name it.
- I know traditional dances and exercise them at first chance.
- I always help my sister with makeup, since I’m the big sister and all.
- I iron most of my family’s clothes during the weekends, helping Mom.
All these may sound mundane, but try thinking about olive gathering or ironing or makeup during the time you’re searching around for that pesky Javascript bug and you’ll know what I mean.
You’ll see the whole spectrum of your life and you’ll surely get it: it’s not all about work, blogging, social networking and Internet. There are things beyond.

OK, here it comes.
1. I could be a pro dishwasher. If I fail as a designer I will triumph as a dishwasher.
2. I could be a physicist. Actually I am. I love talking about astronomy and particle Physics.
3. I see myself as an official cat toy. Playing with my cat, Roxanne, is relieving after a hard day’s work. Except for the scratches.
4. I am a typography and color maniac. I see type everywhere and I try to name the font each time. I don’t use conventional names for colors. Instead I use hexadecimal names e.g. there is no red for me - there is only #F00.
(I guess the last one doesn’t count. No?)

@porcupine
Lol, I’m a pro dishwasher too. Let’s make a dishwashing startup!
And no, the last one doesn’t count. See what I mean?
(Oh and I so wish I had a cat…)

I travel. A lot.
I also travel. I really do.
When not on a trip, i plan my next one.
I help my parents -when possible- with their jobs and finance.
I take care of a tiny garden.
My hobby which acts as my day job takes most of my time now but hey, it’s fun and it will always be my hobby so that counts as a real life activy doesn’ it?

Here it goes:

I agree with your post. Which is not something I will usually do!
I enjoy reading a post that will make one think. Also, thanks for allowing me to comment!
