I too am perplexed at the unwillingness or inability of Italians, even young ones, to speak or understand English, BUT...
...having driven in every European country and capital (and a few beyond that, try Jakarta), I'm afraid to say that your initial thought about Greek drivers (or at least Cretan ones) was the correct one. I respectfully disagree with your assessment of Italian drivers. I.m.n.s.h.o. they behave like choir boys compared to what I see my fellow citizens pull off every day driving around Iraklio...</description>
