A rather strong earthquake rattled all Greece today at approximately 13:35 am. It was measured as a 6,9 in Richter scale, at a focal depth of almost 75 km, fortunately under the sea.
The earthquake itself was rather long and pretty damn strong. We were having lunch when it struck, everybody was at the verge of panic and I was keep saying “Keep calm, it’s just an earthquake, it’s gonna stop”, trying to continue eating. After a while though the vibrations got very strong and we all got really worried, rushing under tables and door frames.
The largest part of Greece was affected by today’s earthquake, while vibrations were recorded even at Italy, Egypt, Syria and Jordan. It was recorded as one of the most wide scale earthquakes in the history of Greece and it certainly was the strongest earthquake I’ve ever experienced. Fortunately, it all happened under the sea, so worse consequences were avoided.
You can find more info at (greek sources) in.gr and flash.gr. The earthquake was also mentioned at CNN and BBC.

And if you stay in Crete you won’t have to change this statement. As far as I can remember all earthquakes near Crete were underwater and at great depth. My father has never mentioned a big earthquake in his childhood, at least not catastrophe-wise, whereas my mother has plenty of stories to tell. Santorini’s volcano is still Crete’s biggest fear.

Nah, I don’t think that earthquakes around the scale of 6 or 7 Richter are not dangerous, it’s just that the sea that surrounds the island somehow protects it.
Not that I’m not grateful about it…I prefer experiencing earthquakes without all the catastrophe. I consider them fascinating.

[...] Earthquake A rather strong earthquake hit Crete (again) this morning, at about 04:00. I was awake at that hour, felt the trembling, thought, ok, earthquake, it’ll pass. But then this bad mofo managed to scare even me: a huge shake, very strong, but very short too. All in all, it lasted about 5-10 seconds. Just for history, the earthquake was a 4.4 on Richter scale. Not that strong, but scary altogether! (Nightly earthquakes are the worst, I tell you) [...]
