5 things that may help you survive mornings

ZZ06FF0AF0.pngI guess we can all confidently say that we hate early mornings. Hate, hate, hate them. Unfortunately, unless you’re self-employed or one of the (un)lucky ones to have a night job, you cannot avoid them.

Eventhough I keep on hating losing my sleep in the mornings, I’ve found that these 5 things get me started every morning. Yes, even Mondays.

  1. Set your alarm clock to go off a quarter of an hour earlier than usual. That’s not new, but it cannot be stressed out enough. I know it helped me - alot.
  2. When that damn thing rings, open your eyes. Do it. Then spend some time to mourn over your lost sleep, but only for 2 minutes maximum. Be as grumpy and negative as you want, but keep it short to 2 minutes. Then get up.
  3. Find your morning ritual and stick to it religiously. Most people already do that, but there is a black sheep every now and then.
  4. While doing something boring (for example, wait for the coffee machine to finish) take the time and think about something creative, but fun. For example, your next blog post. Or your next session in WoW. Or the next best thing, whatever. Anything to get your creativity flow before work obliges you to be creative.
  5. Eat something light but nutritious. I don’t eat anything when I wake up, I admit. But I almost always get a mini-breakfast at about 10. Eating can help a lot with mornings, it’s a huge energy boost, especially when you’re recovering from a bad wake up.

Do you have to get up early? What’s your morning rituals and hacks?

I do #1, because I’m extra slow in the morning, but it was #3 that really helped when I had to wake up at 5am.

My morning ritual? Get up, go to the kitchen, make a cup of chocolate and browse my favourite sites for the next half hour. I probably lose 15 minutes of sleep, but it’s worth it.

You’re a veteran of early mornings, Maria, you *must* know better than us whiners that get up at 9am. :P

Unfortunately, I believe that your suggestions won’t work on me :-( … A good solution is to suggest a 3-day weekend from our employers (yea right) or request from God to add 4 more hours to every single day.

Anyway, have a nice day ;-)

Aww John, come on, share your morning wisdom with us! :)

Unfortunately, adding more hours to my already-full day is not a viable solution :P

    1. Buy a new alarm clock (try something like this http://www.hammacher.com/publish/70460.asp )

    2. Say to your boyfriend/girlfriend to wake you up with a kiss and MAKE YOU some breakfast (if you don’t have a bf/gf find one!)

    3. Try to sleep before 01:00 am (nevah works on me)

    4. DO NOT DREAM!

    5. Wake up one hour before the alarm clock go off. Make love to your boyfriend/girlfriend. Take a bath and go to work. Let her/him eat the breakfast while he/she is trying to figure out how this f*ckin’ -brand new- alarm clock stops “ringin”. You will have some extra time to read a newspaper, check your email and drink a coffee at work.

    gratz!
