The First Hurdle

EDIT: Hm. I’ve solved it, helped by Mark. The problem? My ZoneAlarm PC firewall, that even after I added my Macbook IP to “Allow” list blocked every attempt to reach Internet. Go figure!

Ok, I’ve stumbled upon my first problem with my Macbook… Sharing an internet connection with a PC.

Since I’ve bought the M. just two days ago, you can easily assume that I’m kinda broke at the moment, so I can’t afford a wireless router right now, keep in mind.

The next logical step is sharing my DSL connection between my PC and laptop. I’ve set up Macbook IP to be around the range of my PC IP, I managed to see all PC files from the Macbook and all Macbook files from the PC. So far so good.

I tried to share my Internet connection through the ethernet cable by adding my PC’s IP as the gateway address to the Macbook. The network status screen says I’m connected to the Internet, but alas! No connectivity.

When I ping my PC’s IP, everything ok. When I ping anything web, zilch. Still, my network screen says that I am connected to the Internet via the Built-in Ethernet.

Where is the Internet then? Tell me, ms. Macbook! (She’s called Nemesis, Nem strictly to friends).

Any ideas, you network geeks? I’m clueless in those things, despite my computer science education (I refuse to understand networks).

Try sharing Internet via firewire! I once tried that ( with an iBook having Internet connection ) and worked perfectly!

Thanks for the tip! (eventhough I managed to overcome the problem)

I once tried to share Internet between a PC and a laptop through firewire, it worked once. Just once.

Did I mention how much I hate those network things? Thank God that Apple has made it so easy to connect to anything with MacOS X.

No problem. Although 80% of the times that something does not work so well concerning network issues on your lan it’s a ^%$#@! firewall issue ;)

True, true. I’ve learned it the hard way. :P
