Logo links to homepage 2.0

Have you noticed a new trend on the well-known UI pattern of logo linking to the homepage of the site?

Both Amazon.com and Facebook sport this feature, showing a small “home” graphic icon to further inform naive users that by clicking on the logo, they’ll return to the index page.

Facebook shouldn’t show this all when we’re already in its homepage

Notice that Amazon correctly does not show this hover effect on the homepage, while Facebook still shows the home icon even if you’re already on the home page. If you’d like to use this feature, don’t do that - it can confuse users.

I personally like this for sites as huge as Amazon and Facebook, and consider it a nice eye-candy for blogs and the like. It’s the evolution of the traditional link-to-homepage logo idea, made possible by some simple CSS.
