Some Updates

Sunday, July 30th, 2006 at 10:27 pm

This post is nothing of research value, just some updates on this place and its owner that I thought you might find interesting.

Sleepless

Of the 58 hours that make my weekend (10 Friday hours included), I’ve been awake for about 40 hours, give or take. Busy friends, writing and interesting stuff online (WoW included) took the best of me this weekend, so no beach, no real relaxation. I don’t complain though - I had fun, and my eyes now look like I’ve been sniffing glue all week long.

Photos

My zenphoto gallery is officially dead. Some bug after the upgrade to wordpress 2.0 doesn’t let me upload photos successfully, and I’m too bored to check further the zenphoto forums for an answer. So all my graduation photos are going to flickr, all my future photos as well. It was about time I started really using this thing. Keep posted, summer & beach photos coming soon!

Writing

Don’t forget to grab the greek edition of PC magazine this week! Featuring my usual web 2.0 news & sites pages, as well as my first article on… well, you’ll see. Go buy it!

Earthquake

A rather strong earthquake hit Crete (again) this morning, at about 04:00. I was awake at that hour, felt the trembling, thought, ok, earthquake, it’ll pass. But then this bad mofo managed to scare even me: a huge shake, very strong, but very short too. All in all, it lasted about 5-10 seconds. Just for history, the earthquake was a 4.4 on Richter scale. Not that strong, but scary altogether! (Nightly earthquakes are the worst, I tell you)

Lebanon

What can I possibly comment on that issue? Only that I’m glad the one Lebanese person I know is well and moderately safe. Other than that, I’m deeply sorry and very angry due to the situation there.

Summer

I need a vacation, badly. Not that work tires me that much, just that I need some time on myself, doing nothing that I don’t want to. I’m aiming for a 15-day vacation in August, but I don’t know how much of it I’ll get. Oh well, I can hope… I’m not heading to anywhere, though, I’ll stay home. Macbook fundraising, remember?

Visitors

This month, my blog visitors showed an un-remarkable but nice progress. I’m not sharing numbers with you, but this fact made me really happy, let’s hope it lasts. Thanks for your kindness in visiting, people!

Feel free to share your plans with me, I’d love to know what your summer life is like.

Live, From Flock

Saturday, July 22nd, 2006 at 6:06 pm

So, after my recent problems with Firefox (which occurred right after I installed Titan Quest, I wonder if there is any connection), I decided to give Flock a go.

So far, here are my positive points:

  • Very nice default theme, I couldn’t help but love the polished icons and clean look of the UI.
  • Tons of little features you’ll learn to use and someday, you’ll wonder how you could do without them.
  • Embedded RSS reader. And blogging. And photo sharing. Bliss!
  • Very compliant with most Firefox extensions, that’s a huge plus.

…and the ugly ones:

  • It lacks the total control over bookmarks that Firefox has. Dragging and dropping photos in a HTML form is good, but how difficult dragging and dropping bookmarks in a folder could be?
  • A bit unstable. I know it’s in beta, but still.
  • Really slow with my humongous list of bookmarks.

Yet again, it’s just the first impression I got from using the application for a bit. My first move was to import my Firefox bookmarks and simulate an everyday thing for me, going through all the RSS. I can’t say there weren’t any problems, but in general Flock looks promising.

So, this was Sugar blogging live from Flock. Give this thingie a try, you may even discover the browser of your dreams. And it will be, someday, trust me.

Lost without my Bookmarks

Wednesday, July 19th, 2006 at 7:48 pm

Today, for some reason, Firefox decided to play some nasty tricks on me and my precious bookmarks.

The dreaded “empty bookmarks toolbar” was there when I fired up my FF, in addition to the dreaded “empty bookmarks list”. After the initial panic (OMGBOOKMARKSGONEZOMFDDIEOWSDD*thump*) I decided to check the Application Data Firefox (that probably looks like C:\\Documents & Settings\\Application Data\\Mozilla\\Firefox) folder to see if anything interesting is there.

I found that I had an empty bookmarks.html file (thus the empty bookmark list), but when I checked the bookmarks.bak file I saw that everything was in there. So it was just a matter of renaming the bookmarks.bak to bookmarks.html and replace the original empty file.

Now everything seems to be in order, at least in the order I remember it. My sole problem: Sage. It’s empty, and I must do tricks to fill it up again.

*sigh* Should I give Flock a try?

P.S. Please don’t tell me to save all my bookmarks to one of the numerous social bookmarking service that are out and about. I’m not that kind of gal: I save only the important ones there, articles and things I want to come back to and read when I have the time.

P.S.2 If you’re Greek or somehow you know how to read greek and you’re into the same grave situation as me, check this article from the guys at Wiggler. It may help.

Let the Macbook fundraising begin…

Friday, July 14th, 2006 at 6:39 pm

You heard me, folks. I’ve decided it: this Macbook is gonna be mine.

Nothing’s gonna stop me from buying it, except..well..money. So I officially state the official start of the official Sugar fund raising for the Holy Grail. (by the way, check the new Mac ads)

From now on, no CSS book or Harry Potter edition or Burning Crusade will lure me to spend my hard earned money on Amazon. No eating outside, no drinking outside, no nothing outside : strict savings.

On the other hand, you can help me maybe buy a beer sometime, by donating to the official Sugar & Macbook fundraising, summer - fall 2006, by using the Paypal button on right.

So, the question remains: black or white?
On a darker, darker note: WTF is happening between Israel and Lebanon? For God’s sake, people…

Work & Music

Monday, July 10th, 2006 at 5:26 pm

I admit it, I’m not much of an obsessed music listener. I can’t stand listening to music all day long, because (believe it or not) it gives me headaches.

But I can’t stand working without listening to some music in the background. I’m always knee-deep in what I’m working on, but I think the office/my room is eerie and empty when I work in silence.

So step right in to find out about my favourite playlist…
